iStock has some truly beautiful and creative footage that meets a lot of our buyers needs. For the contributor, the challenge is to find places to insert new ideas. We believe such a place exists – that undefined territory between computer generated (CG) work and camera footage. I'm referring to footage that uses computer processing to combine elements of a composition in stylistically new ways, or subtly to create illusionary spaces. Technically we call this compositing, and there are some good examples of it in our collection, but we think there is still much to explore.
The obvious place to begin your explorations is to learn the power and secrets of the green screen, and the software which unlocks that power. That is one big topic to tackle in a little article like this one, but we do have experts among us who have taken it on. This past spring, Jeff Foster put out “The Green Screen Handbook” which is a wonderful resource for those wanting to check out or go deeper into this technology.
